Abstract
The beginnings of the exact knowledge of the Hepaticae dates from the work of Hofmeister, who in 1350 to 1362 published important investigations on them. He discovered the egg cell in the archegonium, traced the sperm to the surface of the egg and showed that it was fertilized by the sperm.
