Abstract
In this thesis I propose by a study of the plays of John Masefield to discover his dramatic technique and his claim to fame and regard in the capacity of a playwright. The method that I used was to examine the plays of John Masefield, to read his theory of tragedy and to apply it particularly to "The Tragedy of Nan".
In preparation for the compiling of this thesis I read a collection of the pre-war plays of John Masefield and was chiefly indebted. to "John Masefield, "A Study" by Cicil Biggane and "John Masefield, A Critical Study" by W.H. Hamilton. These are the two studies of Masefield that were available and they proved of particular assistance.
