Abstract
To ask a question is as much a matter of method as to give an answer, and if it is true that we must know a question before we can answer, it is also true that we must know some¬ thing of the answer before we can pose a question. So it was quite correct for Descartes to insist that a question ”be wholly determinate, so that we shall have nothing more to seek for than what can be inferred from the data.
