Abstract
Dramatic poetry began but late in Spain, though it was to flower there so brilliantly. In Spain, as in France, England, and in fact in practically all other countries, the drama grew out of the liturgical cere¬ monies of the Church. Some of them, in particular the Passion and Nativity adapted themselves readily to stage presentations. These elements developed when French Monks introduced, together with other customs of their native Churches, this type of literature which was already flourishing in France. The legal texts of the Middle Ages, the "Puerto Juzgo" and later the "Siete Partidas", shed some light upon stage performances, often accompanied by mimetic dances, and likewise on the professional performers. It is very probable that the theatrical traditions of ancient times never completely disappeared from the Peninsula.
