Abstract
This story starts out in the first paragraph with a striking description of what constitutes a gypsy. According to Cervantes’s conception, a member of this tribe is simply surrounded by all the possible circumstances, from birth to death, that will directly contribute to his thievish make-up for which he is universally known. No better definition of a gypsy could be given by any lexicographer. Putting such a descriptive definition into the mind of the reader at once, before going into the real story, is a clever literary procedure, or technique; for, in this manner, the mind is thoroughly impressed with the nature and propensity of a gypsy, which psychological state makes later reading of the story easier to comprehend, the gypsy’s doings somewhat logical, his state rather more pitiful than criminal: in other words, the reader is immediately tuned into harmony of the situations.
