Abstract
Journalism is the business of writing. It includes many classes of writing, but more particularly the writing of news and events, the history of each day. The Journalist is primarily a historian, and it is upon his ability to recognize news and record it faithfully that his career depends. For this reason the history of journalism is a history of peoples, and of nations, and of human interests. Journalism in the American colonies, and later in the States of the Union was definitely a part of the government and society of the day, and it is in this light that the following phases of its development prove interesting.
