Abstract

Catalysts are essential to most hydrogenation reactions. Very few hydrogenations occur in the absence of some sort of catalyst. Thus, the earlier work of Bergius on coal hydrogenation was non-catalytic, but more recently the process has become practically entirely catalytic thru the development of the I. G. Farbenindustrie in Germany.
