Abstract
In view of the fact that the various phases of life and culture of a people are reflected in its literature, the criterion upon which a correct and complete evaluation of any literary writer in any epoch is based must necessarily include the degree of truthfulness with which that epoch is represented in his works. Conversely, one of the essential prerequisites of a true and complete evaluation of the literary product-s of a writer is the study of the epoch in which his works were created, and of the problems which confronted this epoch. Such study is of even greater importance in regard to Ludwig Anzengruber since his works are almost exclusively of the regional type "Heimatskunst" is the more precise German term and since ·several of his dramas are based on definite actual events, are dealing with particular social problems, and are laid into definite periods of time.
Ansengruber is an Austrian writer. He is the literary exponent of the social and cultural life and views of the people of German Austria. The time in which Anzengruber lived and created his works -- he was born in 1839 and died in 1889 was a period of transition no.t only in the literary sense but socially, economically, and politically as well. This fact makes necessary the study not only of his own times, but also a brief consideration of the period immediately preceding it. Since the political, economic, and social conditions of those times had a dominant influence upon the literary situation, they may best receive first consideration.
