Abstract

Leisure, once the exclusive privilege of the aristocracy, is in America, to a degree the privilege of the masses . With the development of -scientific methods and machinery the amount of time free from employment has increased, causing leisure to loom up as a gigantic problem. The significance of increasing spare time is most important because of the use that is made of it. The use of anything calls for acts of choice. The more leisure we have, the more choosing is necessary. The present generation having more time at its disposal than had any previous generation in history must make more choices in a lifetime than did any earlier generation. Therefore, it is most important that guidance is given for the use of the unengaged time. Dean Ingle, the famous gloomy dean of England, did not exaggerate when he said,

"The right use of leisure is no doubt a harder problem than the right use of our working hours. The soul is dyed the colour of its leisure thoughts. As a man thinketh in his heart so is he."
