Abstract
Expression is the manifestation of mental activity; the outward sign of inward life. Every action of the face or hand, every modulation of the voice is simply an outward effect of an inward condition. We get the thoughts, feelings, and character of our fellow-being from the action of his body or from what we hear from his voice. Hence, we see that expression is not of the body, but through the body; it is manifested by motions and actions of the body, by tones and modulations of the voice. But "it is the soul that speaks."
