Abstract
In considering the teaching of history in the grades, one must necessarily begin with a clear-cut statement of what he means by history.
The time has long since passed when students consider history a record of war and strife and reconciliation; when they regard it as a summary of meaningless dates doled out to them to be memorized. They realize that History is not one of these, but when they are asked to define it, they cannot answer so easily.
From a group of forty seventh and eighth grade children whom I asked to give their own definition of History, I received the following as the moot typical definition: 1st. History is the study of the past; 2nd. History is the study of great men; 3rd. History is the study of how countries have become world powers; and 4th. History tells us of the life of man.
