Abstract

One of the purposes of the school is to enable the child to adjust himself to the natural and social environment in which he must. work and live. Managers of large industries have been coping with the problem of safety for many years. It is their contention that safety must be made a part and parcel of every member of a community. People must be brought to think of safety on the same basks as good health. Statistics show that two-thirds of all the accidental deaths occur outside of industries, which emphasizes the importance of a campaign to promote safety in the streets and in the homes. Safety engineers have come to the conclusion that the foundation of safety must be laid in the schools. As the Good Shepherd Himself has said, "And a little child shall lead them," so when the child in school is instructed how to protect himself and taught to respect safety, then through the child the parent will be reached and influenced more effectively than in any other way. It is the purpose of this thesis to point out the justification of teaching safety in the elementary schoo1s and the ways and means of reducing accidents through school instruction.
