Abstract

In this thesis I have endeavored to compile in one paper as complete a history o,f the Mask and Makeup as was practical in a shorter treatise. The material contained in the following pages has been drawn from many and scattered sources. Kenneth MacGown's book, Masks and Demons, has proved an invaluable source, and I am indebted to him for much of the material concerning the source and history of the Mask. I have drawn freely from the following works: John F. Baird's book, Makeup, and Glenn Hughes' History of the Theatre. Magazines and periodicals have contributed an important portion of the material on Makeup. Because of the lack of published works, personal experience constitutes a large portion of the latter chapters.
