Abstract
The prescribed course in American History for eighth grade pupils, in the city of Milwaukee, has been the basis of this thesis. The subject matter has been divided into units, according to the method used in the text. Tryon and Lingley's - "The American People and Nation." The major problems to be solved were derived, with modifications and additions, from Mary G. Kelty's book, - "Teaching American History in the Middle Grades of the Elementary School." The general and specific objectives are conclusions drawn by Harold Rugg, Professor of Education, Teachers' College, Columbia University; Rolla M. Tryon, Professor of the Teaching of History in the University of Chicago; and Mary G. Kelty, Supervisor of History and the Social Studies in the Training Department, and instructor in the teaching of history, State Teachers' College, Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
