Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a historical background for the craft of the modern dramatic critic. Since no one is more criticized than the critic it is only just that his place in literature be established and his rights enforced.
The gradual development of theatrical criticism in America has been an interesting succession of problems and difficulties. Yet under these circumstances the newspaper has successfully maintained its independent attitude and today the theatrical page has become a popular feature in every paper.
Thus in this thesis the chief purpose is to summarize the history of criticism while particularly stressing those events in the history which demonstrate the courage and independence of the press in its defense against the harsh, unjust accusations made by the business men of the theater.
