Abstract

Treatment of varicose veins by the injection method has resulted in diminution of prolonged suffering by many patients. The ideal solution is one that ill cause no sloughing of the tissues immediately surrounding the vein; nontoxic in the amounts used; effective; not too painful and not capable of reducing drug hypersensitivity. Many
drugs have been tried with varying efficacy. Among the more important are, dextrose and sodium chloride mixture, quinine, quine urea hydrochloride, quinine dihydrochloride, quinine and urethane, 30 to 40% sodium salicylate, 20% sodium chloride, and sodium morrhuate. A sclerosing agent, to be most efficient; must destroy the endothelium of the vein thereby causing a thrombus. Sodium morrhuate has been found in many instances to be more efficient than any other solution.
