Abstract

An attempt is here made to show by a brief survey the various types of student publications in the elementary and junior and senior high school. The magazine, the yearbook, the handbook and the newspaper are outlined, in order to show how they may be practically carried out in our schools. The newspaper, being the most popular, is given increasingly greater emphasis. The duties, responsibilities and helpful characteristics of the faculty adviser are enumerated.

With the concrete examples of the technical procedures for these four types illustrated, I have endeavored to accumulate sufficient evidences of claimed values to justify the educational worth of this type of extracurricular activity. Moat of the selected material has been gleaned from current educational magazines and recently published books dealing with extracurricular activities in high schools and specific procedure for school journalism. Not all of t he references in the periodical bibliography have been cited, particularly where the main objectives were duplicated.
