Abstract
There have been but few periods in the history of the Western church in which its administration and the lives of the clergy have been completely exempt from censure. Abuses occurred in the middle ages which required the constant effort of reformers to counter-act. In the eleventh century the church was confronted with the contest about Lay-investiture. This was an abuse which grew out of the feudal system.
