Abstract
Literature in America has led an eventful career for almost three hundred years . There were first, the almost barren years of the early settlers, when the task of sustaining life left little leisure time for either reading or writing, and the lack of printing facilities discouraged the rearing of a literature. Among the literary pioneers who surmounted these difficulties were the Puritan historians, sermonists and poets.
More fruitful years followed. The essayists, the New York school. the New England school, the poets and prose writers of the South, and finally the breezy Westerners all had their hand in producing literature on .American soil.
But was this all American literature?
