Abstract
The trust company is a financial institution that has quite recently been developed to great importance here in the United States. It is essentially an American institution, there being practically no companies of this type in Europe, or the Orient. In the Latin-American Countries the same condition exists. With the possible exception of the Mexican Trust Company which is purely American in Foundation. While the history of trust companies in this country date back one hundred years, it is significant that they did not begin to acquire the national importance and volume of business they now command until twenty-five or thirty years ago. Along about this time sprang up the era of the corporation. The development of corporate enterprise was progressing rapidly and along side of this movement many of our great industrial, public utility, and railroad corporations were beginning to assume shape. The ordinary commercial banks of issue no longer were able to adequately handle these newly developed corporations and corporate activities. It was no longer possible to rely on individuals or even groups of individuals to carry out corporate, mortgage, trust, or contractual obligations. Moreover, the commercial bank could not cope with the proper disposition of the enormous quantities of surplus wealth that came into existence...
