Abstract
English is a unit of study. Including in its scope "language" in the lower grades and spelling, reading, composition and grammar in the upper, it is by far the most important subject in our schools. All parts of this whole are closely interwoven, and the study of one of these branches is the study of the whole. An understanding of grammar aids in correct expression; a knowledge of the difficulties of composition lays a foundation for a true appreciation of literature; and literature itself is the best aid in the art of graceful and powerful composition.
