Abstract
Too present a thorough analysis of Thackeray's famed "novel without a hero"--Vanity Fair, is my task. However, before delving into the author's purpose of writing, and into the construction of the novel, one must first seek out its fundamental duties and concepts. One must realize that the purpose of fiction lies in its very nature--whether violent or subdued. Elizabeth Monroe has set down in The Novel and Society a clear and noteworthy definition of the novel.
