Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is three-fold: (1) it will endeavor to give an appreciation of Henry Esmond as a purely literary creation; (2) it will endeavor to give a true representation of England as it was during the reign of Queen Anne; and (3) it will endeavor to determine whether or not this novel is historically exact in its portrayal of the life and the conditions as they existed during the reign of Queen Anne.
