Abstract
We are in the midst of a vigorous and widespread reform movement in educational methods. The great aims of the new trends are creative self-expression and development of a tolerant adaptation to environment. In contrast to uniformity, standardization, and conformity to ideas of others, the twentieth century philosophy emphasizes confident affirmation or the importance of self, uniqueness and originality. Development of technique becomes a means toward an end, not an end in itself. The new education seeks to evoke and to build upon the urge to create. Hughes Mearns so fittingly stated, "It cannot be summoned. It can only be permitted." Therefore modern methods are providing 'drawing - out' environments in sharp contrast to the 'pouring - in' environments of the older schools.
