Abstract
When in 1337 the One Hundred Years' War no longer contented itself with casting dark shadows before, but actually reached its inception, he who was to become the most prominent figure in the conflict was, as yet, a lad of only eight years. Very likely no one but the boy himself, later to become known as the Black Prince, entertained the thought that he would play a conspicuous part in the struggle.
