Abstract
This essay on the structure and function of the spleen is accompanied with a lengthy bibliography. The intention was to bring the completed bibliography up to date. Time, however, would not permit and furthermore, for the purpose of this paper, the bibliography is considered quite adequate. It represents all the, work that had been done for twenty-five years, from 1879 until 1905, in reference to the spleen.
The references in the main are from the Index Medicus. Complimentary references are from the Library of the Surgeon-General, The Quarterly Cumulative Index, and the current literature.
The bibliography brings out the point of the opening paragraphs of the paper, that the work of the first years in modern science as regards the spleen, shows little advance over previous centuries. Not until after 1900 was comprehensive investigation carried on. The text of the paper in a large measure is drawn from-the latter references in the bibliography.
