Abstract
During the latter part of the nineteenth century we have a revival of the drama in England. A new movement sweeps the country which is paralleled in all the countries of Europe, and in America. It was a current of naturalistic thought, and was due in part to the spreading of the theory of causo-mechanical evolution. New ideas in regard to life and its problems were brought forth. Of the advocates of the new ideas peculiar to the period, I believe that Henrik Ibsen, the Norwegian dramatist, was one of the most prominent. Without doubt his plays are the first to express in their themes the attitude toward life and its problems. We find that he has picked a definite problem for each play, he discusses it and does so with a master hand. In each play we observe the germ of another play.
