Abstract
The mentally retarded or exceptional child is one of the most puzzling personalities met with in our schools. He stands near the dividing line between normalcy and feeblemindedness, and his future happiness or tragic discouragement, and often ruin, depends upon the attitude of the school and the teachers towards his shortcomings during his childhood and adolescence. He may be trained to healthy competition in the field of labor with his normal brother, or he may reach adulthood an utter incompetent, a potential criminal, a moral degenerate, an unfortunate ne'er-do-well.
