Abstract

A strong resemblance has often been noted between Virgil and Alfred Tennyson. Phases of this resemblance have been treated by various writers, notably Mr. T. H. Warren, Miss Elizabeth Nitchie, and Mr. W. P. Mustard.

It is our purpose in this thesis to draw an analogy between the two .poets. This will include a comparison of their lives and their personal views and convictions; also, a comparison of the characteristics of their work and of the similarities which can be found in their modes of expression. Our method in evolving this analogy is to place the biographies of the two men side by side and draw a comparison between them. Their views as propounded in their works, and their style and diction will be judged by the same method. Whether or not Mr. Tennyson deserves the epithet of "English Virgil" may by concluded from the results of the comparison.
