Abstract
Hardly any year in American history so distinctly marks the transition from one era to another as 1829; yet here as elsewhere the new dispensation can be traced back to its foundations in the previous state of things. Therefore, I have opened my discourse with a brief account of Jackson’s early public life so that his later life may be better understood. It has been my object to show in the faithful story of his life the trace he left in the nation’s- history, particularly, his institution of an epoch of democracy. I have not slighted his failings or his virtues, but have attempted to present the history of his administration in an impartial manner.
