Abstract
The work under discussion is confessional in its character, and hence extremely colored by subjectivity. The author himself calls it a ”Bekentnisbuch ” and thus has removed all claims to a really objective presentation of what he considers the three great spiritual forces shaping the human outlook upon the world. Paganism. Christianity and Judaism. Although written in a genuinely scholarly manner, and disclosing a deep Insight into religious thought, the work remains essentially a book of confession. Moreover, one can immediately discern in the author the novelist, the poet, who, in moments of reflection turned to philosophy.
