Abstract

A discussion of Roman ideas on immortality is necessarily linked with a consideration of Greek thoughts on the subject. For, from as early as the second century before Christ, the Romans were influenced not only by Greek customs, but also by Greek philosophy. The introduction of certain philosophical ideas filled a real need in Roman life, since the Roman religion had hitherto, basically, been a worship of numina which protected the family and the State. After the Punic Wars, when Rome felt outside influences strongly, people required a more individual religion.
