Abstract

Let us go back to the early eras of football, when the game was more or less a rough and tumble affair and when men depended upon brawn and strength to gain heights in the game. The little man was often left out of the game, and usually only one light man made any college football team, the quarterback. On the other hand the heaviest man usually was the center. He was expected not only to pass the ball but also to lead interference on line smashes which constituted nearly the whole offense of old-time football; and he had to lead the defense, stopping play after play sent at him by the opposition. He had no pass defense duties, and was never called upon to use any speed or extraordinary intelligence.
