Abstract

’’Anti-religious tendencies of the Restoration drama” is a subject which in this age of science and skepticism should interest us. A rough parallel might be drawn from a comparison of Restoration drama, life, and ensuing reaction and the modern theatre, life, and the reaction which is yet to be experienced. However, this thesis undertakes to examine only the Restoration drama and its anti-religious tendencies. An inspection of all the Restoration plays seemed superfluous to me since those dramas which I selected seemed representative of the general output of the period, being written, as they are, by both major and minor writers.
