Abstract
The thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) in the presence of the three phenyltin chlorides, PhSnCl3, Ph2SnCl2, and Ph3SnCl, has been studied and a complete mechanistic interpretation of the reaction is provided. Only a little monomeric methyl methacrylate is produced in the reaction and a significant amount of the starting polymer is converted to a non-volatile, cross-linked tin ester.
