Abstract
It has been known for some time that microorganisms do not perform all of the enzymatic functions of which they are genetically capable and that changes in the environment can elicit changes in the cells' capacity to perform certain biochemical transformations. The molecular mechanisms by which environmental changes are able to produce changes in the enzymatic capacity of the cells have intrigued scientists for many years, and recently some of these mechanisms have been elucidated. Studies concerning the manner in which the environment affects enzymatic processes have centered on the effect on enzyme activity, and the effect on enzyme synthesis...
