Abstract

This dissertation has the following objectives: first, to define the conceptual limits within which nineteenth century utopian writers worked and to place their literary utopias in the larger context of nineteenth century conceptions of change, time, history and progress; second, to define the artistic limits of these literary utopias by examining the fictive and rhetorical strategies of these utopian writers.
