Abstract
The purposes of this dissertation are to 1) provide an introduction to the philosophy of Jose Ortega y Gasset; 2) examine the theories in Ortega's philosophy for restructuring the university; 3) demonstrate the crisis in American undergraduate education and its ramifications for teacher education; and 4) suggest a restructuring of the American university and teacher education based on the philosophical and educational theories of Ortega. The overall intention of this study is to stimulate dialogue about the possibilities available when education is considered from a different paradigm.
