Abstract
When one first becomes a parent, there are visions of a blissfuI future watching the precious bundle of joy grow to become a loving, compliant, and perfect child. It is not long before the not-so-Uttle bundle of joy "rules the roost," and the stressed parent wonders what happened to that rosy future! As the mother of six children, it is easy for me to keep in mind the struggles that loving and conscientious parents encounter on a daily basis as they endeavor to provide a safe, happy, and secure environment for their children. I can also relate to those families who struggle, at times, as their children encounter the usual, and not so usual, difficulties of growing and maturing. It is to all of us, as parents, and to all of our children that this dissertation is dedicated.
