Abstract
In previous papers (May et al., 1967; Watrous et al., 1970), the Sperber preparation in the chicken was used in studying renal tubular transport and metabolism of morphine. This morphine-morphine ethereal sulfate system served as a basis for localizing the site of action of probenecid to the peritubular border of the renal tubular cell. As a generalization, it was suggested that other model systems might be established to provide the basis for localizing sites of action of drugs in the Sperber preparation. The present study demonstrates that the serotonin-5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HT-5HIAA) system models itself after the morphine-morphine ethereal sulfate system. Data accruing from the present study confirm and extend the general concepts developed in the morphine-MES studies.
