Abstract
The ultimate purpose of the dissertation will be to determine if Tillich's notion of the compatibility of faith and doubt has any significance for the classical Catholic tradition's understanding of faith and its relation to doubt. According to a deep rooted Catholic tradition the response of faith is such that it excludes doubt. At no moment in faith, and under no circumstances, will this tradition allow doubt to be compatible with the actualization of the response of faith. This, in a few words, is the classical Catholic understanding of the relationship between faith and doubt which will be presented as the point of comparison with Tillich.
