Abstract
A comparative study was made of the virulence of selected strains of E. Coli isolated from human disease. Strains from patients with severe systemic infections were compared to enteropathogenic strains to determine whether their virulence differed in test systems other than the mouse. The chicken embryo was selected as a test system because it is a sterile and immunologically immature host (Romanoff, 1960 and Solomon, 1965). Thus these bacterial strains could be studied in this host without interactions of other microorganisms or antibodies. In vitro systems were also employed for this comparative study in order to minimize many of the in ovo variables.
