Abstract

This study was motivated in large part by several factors. The driving force in my effort to study older adults has been Dr. Kristy Nielson. Her enthusiasm and sense of purpose in understanding cognitive functioning, particularly memory and inhibitory control, in older adults has been very inspirational. Studying cognitive changes in older adults has allowed me to blend my desire to understand the functioning of the brain with my desire to help others improve the quality of their lives through assessment, therapy, and research. The opportunity to work with older adults has also allowed me to pursue my interest in history. I am inspired by their stories of struggle and hardship, determination and success, love and commitment. I can only hope that I will be an attentive student and a faithful conservator of the lessons imparted in their stories.
