Abstract

The scope and content of teaching reading at the college level is a relatively new field of study. In the early years of the twentieth century, diagnostic testing instruments for identifying problem readers were not available. Likewise, materials specifically designed for reading improvement were unavailable. The emergence of reading improvement at the college level, as a field of study, has been reviewed in Lowe's resume of the history of college reading.
