Abstract
This dissertation began as a comparative study of St . Augustine and Luther, and, in the way of most dissertations, became narrowed to a treatment of the young Luther. I remained convinced that Luther owed far more of his theological formation to St. Augustine than has yet been made evident by scholars hip. Thus, this dissertation remains, in at least one major aspect, a preliminary study which I hope to follow up in the future.
