Abstract
The problem for this thesis was to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that could account for the occurrence of the variable HbA/HbB phenotypes. To accomplish this it was necessary to investigate the genetic basis for this phenomenon and to develop reticulocyte and cell free systems for studies on the control or HbA and HbA synthesis. To successfully carry out these studies, it was necessary also to develop improved methods to resolve the components and to obtain better and more complete data on the distribution of the components among a large population of cats. The discovery or minor hemoglobins within the HbB fraction led to studies to characterize their structure and properties in the relationship to the major cat hemoglobins, HbA and HbB.
