Abstract
Americans hold firmly to an ancient but timeless ideal--choice. To be an American means to have choices. Americans decide what houses to buy, spouses to marry, books to read, and churches to join. Yet, ironically, Americans are often powerless to make one decision with a profound and enduring effect--where to send their children to school. The educational winds appear to be shifting in favor of empowering parents to choose the educational setting appropriate for their children.
