Abstract
The following is a short introduction describing the human disease X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). The use of pre-existing reviews facilitated this effort (1, 9, 17, 39, 43). No attempt was made to discuss in detail the vast amount of clinical research that has been devoted to studying XLH. The object of this introduction is to acquaint the reader with the scope of the problems involved in studying XLH, and to provide, background for understanding the subsequent doctoral research. The salient features of calcium and phosphate regulation pertinent to the characteristic abnormalities of XLH are also discussed.
