Abstract
Genetic regulatory control mechanisms are necessary for the normal proliferation and survival of cells. These control mechanisms have been, and are currently being, intensively investigated. Much of our current knowledge in this area of research has been derived from studies of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The ability, or inability, of various strains of E. coli to express a particular phenotype under experimentally-defined growth conditions has led to the elucidation of many control mechanisms that regulate specific gene expression.
