The effect of pressure on the crystal structures of silicon oxynitride, germanium oxynitride, α- and β-polymorphs of silicon nitride has been measured at pressures up to 35 kbars at room temperature using neutron time-of-flight diffraction techniques. Results of this study permit interpretation of the compressibility behavior based on the structural rearrangements that occur with pressure.

This work has been carried out under the auspices of the United States Energy Research and Development Administration and also through a grant from the National Science Foundation.
